Your Crown Your Story exhibition
Your Crown Your Story: celebrating beauty, expression and belonging
This project is supported by funding from Inner West Council for Open Inner West 2019.
2 Sydney Stylists, in collaboration with Eunice Konan and Saskia Powell, present:
Your Crown, Your Story: celebrating beauty, expression & belonging through a photographic exhibition.
Fatou’s Hair Architects has been a cultural fixture of Newtown for the past twenty five years! In this unprecedented piece of work, photographer Eunice Konan took portraits of Fatou’s clients, showcasing the expression of beauty and culture of African hairstyles within the Australian society.
It’s an inclusive celebration of people of different walks of life and the stories they choose to tell through their hair. The portraits are set against the streets of Newtown, which are as iconic and enduring as African cultures. And will be exhibited at the Chrissie Cotter Gallery.
Styling African hair is a point of expression, but beyond that it’s a badge of identity, of belonging, of kinship, of spaces where stories are told and journeys shared.
In choosing to own and tell our story, we open the space to the wider members of society who want to express themselves through exquisite hair architecture that may not be readily available to them.
The opening night's public program will include storytelling through fashion, film and music.
